Burpee Seed Starting is an all in one system for a great price

Burpee's most advanced seed starting system is guaranteed to grow bigger and better seedlings every time. I'm not sure what that means, but it has been developed by Burpee and is an all-in-one kit that has everything you need to start growing seeds. It is easy to set up and requires less maintenance and watering than other systems.

The transparent cover retains heat and moisture to get your seeds up and growing fast and a capillary mat draws water from the bottom tray reservoir and feeds it to each cell evenly. Roots don't stick to mat as in other systems and the bottom tray holds plenty of water so your seeds stay healthy and you don't have to water as often. Plus, it is a large 72-cell tray which makes it easy to start all your seeds in one unit and it's reusable so all in all it sounds like a great deal for the price.

OXO Good Grips Quick Release Gardening Bulb Planter both punches the hole and covers the bulb

For those of us with weather suitable for bulb planting, this tool will help make the job easy. You push and twist the Bulb Planter into soil then pull it back out, leaving the perfect hole for planting. After the bulb is in place, use the Planter's Quick Release lever to replace the soil back into the hole. The planter is constructed of heavy gauge, chrome plated carbon steel, and it features an extended handle that is wide enough to fit two hands for added strength when plunging into soil. The Planter's gripping areas are soft, comfortable and non-slip even when hands are wet. The Bulb Planter also features a tooth pattern specially designed for easily penetrating and twisting through soil. Use the stamped in, easy-to-read standard and metric measurement markings on both sides of the Bulb Planter to plant at precise depths.

I decided to try this lopper on a neighbor's pear tree that the bear wrecked, breaking limbs while it ate all the fruit. Just one look at the tool lets you know it is good quality. The feel of it is heftly and strong. The tight-Lock flips up to extend tool, and flips down lock handles at desired length and there was no wobbliness or give when cutting with the lopper extended. The cuts were clean and easy so that it went right through 1 1/2" limbs and worked even on slightly larger ones. There was n struggle to make the cut. When extended the handles are a wide reach apart but that didn't affect the way it cut. A really sweet tool which I will use for many years. I want to thank Fiskars for the opportunity to review this item.loppers4.jpeg

EZ Leaf Hauler proves impossible to set up

I visited a friend who was very disappointed that her EZ Leaf Hauler had arrived after she had raked her leaves, but she got it out for me to see. The problem begain when she tried to put it together. No matter how she pulled, stretched, bent the fabric and/or the poles, no matter how much she gritted her teeth, she could not force the pole into the pocket which would hold up the sides. She is very disappointed and is returning it. The tarp will work just fine until the design is improved.

Lawn Boy Briggs & Stratton Variable Speed Self Propelled Lawn Mower does double duty in the fall.

I finally got out the lawn mower and started making the last cut of the year. There are places on my lawn that keep growing even in cool weather. The grass cutting did double duty as leaf shredding. I never bother raking leaves off the lawn, I just run the lawn mower over the them and it shreds the leaves nicely. It's particularly easy if you have a grass catcher on the lawn mower as the leaves and debris can be thrown on the compost pile. Here is a picture of the result of my efforts--a clear path free of leaves and high grass. IMG_1082.JPG

Ames True Temper Clog-Free Leaf Rake is the tried and true way to clean the yard of leaves

The leaves have just about completely fallen. I don't clean up around the house until they're all down. I usually rake the leaves onto a tarp and pull it to the compost pile. I prefer the hand rake method to the leaf blower the noise of which makes me crazy as well as the use of more gas and oil. Besides it's good exercise and Ames has a child's rake so that you can share some time with a small helper and enjoy their company.

Arrow Red Barn Shed will protect garden tools all winter

If you're like me, when I start to bring in all the garden tools, the rototiller, the shovels, rakes and hoses, I am dismayed to find, there is no room for them or for me in the tool shed. Instead of piling tools on top of the rototiller and jamming the hoses inbetween shelves why not treat yourself to this 10' by 8' shed? This shed offers a huge amount of headroom and is great for organizing many types of large lawn and garden tools, equipment, It is shaped like a barn and is red and made from galvanized steel.

Fiskars PowerGear Bypass Pruner has a rotating handle for ease of use

Fiskars made these pruners with a handle that rotates so that you can squeeze the pruners as you cut which is easier on the hand. They are made for small to medium hands and I like the way the pruners feel and the cutting is smooth and clean. It cuts through 3/4" easily with out strain and the blades have a non stick coat. I only wish Fiskar's had provided a small diagram with labeled parts so that the mechically challenged, like me,could know the blade changing screw from the lock. But it works as advertised. It helped me prune the suckers off the ancient apple tree I'm trying to tame without tiring my hand. Thanks to Fiskars for sending us these to review.
