Hearne seed has a nice selection for winter cover crops

prod_P0660296943_0.jpg

I just got back to California and my garden this week. The corn is finished and tomorrow I'll till it under. I just ordered a winter cover crop that should come within a week. I think the organic SoilMax Legume mix looks good. You can sow it in the fall and expect growth until winter when the plants will protect the soil from erosion. In spring when the plants begin to flower, they can be tilled in to increase nitrogen and make the soil lighter and more tillable.

Tyco Black Plastic Sheeting 20X100 is the gardener's best helper

410o-Ue6c0L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Black plastic sheeting does multiple jobs in my garden. It cuts off sunlight to kill weeds, it protects a cultivated area from weather and weeds, it keeps the soil warm around plants so the the growing season is extended. I cut the sheeting in strips to go between rows early in the season to save myself weeding time and trouble. I used it successfully over an area where I didn't want the blackberries to spread. I keep it around the edges of the garden where the grass wants to invade. Wonderful stuff! Makes my gardening so much easier.

Shasta Daisy is easy to grow and can be planted now. It will over winter and grow into blossoming flowers in summer. It grows to 24 - 28 Inches and is a hardy perennial, forming dense colonies once established. The plant blooms over a long period, from early summer until fall. The bright flowers contrast nicely with the glossy, dark green foliage, livening up any garden bed. The plant is ideal as a cut flower, lasting up to 10 days in arrangements. It is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds and, better yet, the plant is resistant to deer. A great addition to any flower garden.

TwisterPicker Perfect for Harvesting Fruit

410CGBQG95L._AA280_.jpg

Are your peaches getting ripe? Here is a fruit picker that holds the fruit and twists it off the branch without injuring the tree or the fruit. The Twister is small, smooth and light. You open the fruit holders when it gets to the fruit. When you let the fruit holders close on the fruit, your two hands are free for a quick twist. No more struggling through the limbs and twigs as you do with a basket or a bag . This fruit picker comes without handle--a broom handle works fine.

  • So easy to use; even Grandma can use the Twister.
  • Fruit damage is not a factor with the Twister. The fruit is twisted off the natural way.
  • No clumsy bag or basket to tangle in the tree.
  • Light weight (8 oz.) makes picking fun and fast.
  • Slim profile lets you access all the fruit on the tree.

Havahart Trap catches Squirrels and chipmunk size pests

511zWxKLsKL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Recently, I had a ground squirrel problem in the garden. The little sucker was digging under plants and killing them. I don't use poison as it gets in the food chain so I used a Havahart trap which is a handy device for any gardener. Not knowing what bait to use, I used cheese, taping it down on the spring, and voila! two days later, I had my culprit. I then drove about five miles away and let the critter loose in the woods where he or she would not hurt anything. Problem solved! These traps are great tools and come in various sizes depending on the problem animal.

McCulloch Electric Chipper/Shredder for easy mulch and compost

41HrW3lxO5L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Here is an item on my wish list. A chipper shredder makes mulch out of garden and pruning waste. McCulloch chipper/shredders make quick work out of twigs and small branches. The 3-way feed makes it easy to reduce your yard waste in a minimal amount of time. This will not do the big limbs, but it saves you packing your leaves in bags for pickup because you have made your own mulch. The shredded waste can also be composted.

Mammoth Red Clover Cover Crop overwinters and provides nitrogen

31-fnUMwXgL._SL500_AA197_.jpg

A cold front has made me think of fall. I have some bare places in the garden and it's a good time to start a cover crop that will over winter and provide nitrogen when tilled under in the spring. Mammoth red clover can be sown in spring, summer or fall. It can take temperatures down to 10 degrees and grows to 3 feet high. This clover does well in clay and acid soils. You can also make tea from the flowers.

Tricam Gorilla Dumping Cart can also carry your harvest home

41WkNZogAIL._SL500_AA280_.jpgThey call this a dumping cart and it can be used readily to haul rocks, dirt, plants, compost in or out of the garden. But I see this design as an excellent way to carry your harvested vegetables out of the garden and into the kitchen. It has a nice, flat bottom and is so deep as to crush the squash or tomatoes. When you are getting ready to can or dry your harvest, you need a sturdy cart to bring it all in.
